Sunday 19th April, 2009

Game 1 (Opening Day)
Richmond Knights (1) Vs Essex Arrows (7)

Don’t tell Carlos Mancheno that all he can do is pitch, the Arrows starting pitcher belted a 2 run homer over the left field fence in the first inning to start the Essex Arrows on their way to a 7-1 opening day victory over host Richmond at Ham Field on Sunday. Mancheno drove in 2 more runs with a base hit later in the game. Carlos was no slouch on the mound either as he limited the Knights to 1 run on 3 hits, walking only 2 and striking out 12 in a superb complete game performance.
Third baseman Billy Johnson collected 3 hits, stole 3 bases, scored 3 times and first baseman Adrian Bonsor and second baseman Steve Simmons had 2 hits apiece to contribute to the Arrows 10 hit attack.
The Arrows played errorless ball with Luke Foley making some fine plays in the outfield. The Arrows held a 2-1 advantage until the 6th when they scored 3 times extending their lead and pushed across 2 insurance runs in the 7th to put the game away. Not that Carlos needed the extra runs, his masterful pitching bewildered the Knights hitters the entire game. Yes, the guy can pitch but he’s also pretty good with the lumber!

Game 1 Arrows players were: John Blose, Franklin Sequera, Billy Johnson, Carlos Mancheno, Kerry Wilshire, Steve Simmons, Adrian Bonsor, Rudi Fonseca and Luke Foley.

Game 2
Richmond Knights (12) Vs Essex Arrows (16)

The second game of the double-header was one of the most exciting games in Arrows history although excruciating to watch at times as the Arrows battled back from 5-2, 7-3, 10-5 and 11- 8 deficits to win 16-12 in 8 innings. Essex scored 3 runs in the top of the 7th inning to tie the score at 11. Adrian Bonsor pinch-hitting coaxed a walk and after Rudi Fonseca pinch ran for Bonsor, Luke Foley forced Fonseca at 2nd base with an infield groundout. The Arrows were 2 outs away from defeat but they proceeded to score 3 runs and the game was suddenly tied. Pitching in relief of Luke Foley, (who was making his first ever start for Essex on the mound) and Billy Johnson, Carlos Mancheno held Richmond scoreless in the bottom of the 7th and set the stage for more dramatics in the 8th.
The Arrows scored 5 times in the 8th to take their first lead of the ballgame, Mancheno allowed Richmond only a single run in the bottom of the 8th and everyone in the Arrows dugout could let out a huge sigh of relief! Hitting honours in the ballgame for the Arrows went to Luke Foley who hit his first ever home run for the Arrows over the fence in left and to John Blose who also homered to left field. Blose had 4 hits and 3 rbi, Foley 3 hits and 3 rbi, Kerry Wilshire got 3 hits and Billy Johnson had 2 hits and an rbi.
The Arrows mustered 16 hits but didn’t help their cause by committing 9 errors, these contributed to 7 of the Knights 12 runs. It was an incredible ballgame, played in an atmosphere you could cut with a knife. Arrows Manager Luis Castro who played first base in the game and doubled in 5 at bats was very happy with the way the team stuck to it’s task of getting back into the game, especially the ‘wild’ 7th inning that laid the foundation for the win. “The guys played great today, both games, the errors I can do without but I’m thrilled with how we battled back in the second game, not just once but many times” he said as he delivered his team talk after the game.

Game 2 Arrows players were: John Blose, Franklin Sequera Billy Johnson, Carlos Mancheno, Kerry Wilshire, Mario Lara, Luis Castro, James Cane, Adrian Bonsor, Luke Foley and Rudi Fonseca.
